Symposium 3rd Announcement - 12th Southern African Plant Breeding Symposium, 11-15th March 2018

Dear colleague,

It is difficult to believe but the 12th Southern African Plant Breeding Symposium at the Gateway Hotel, Umhlanga Ridge, Durban, is around the corner. In order for you to not miss out on one of the exciting events on any plant breeder’s calendar, the SAPBA Executive Committee would like to remind you of some important deadlines for the 12th Southern African Plant Breeding Symposium. We would also like to confirm that we were able to secure some exciting keynote speakers for the symposium. We will host four international and three national keynote speakers.

Thank you to everyone who contributed towards securing excellent keynote speakers. We would also like to thank all sponsors that already came on board, enabling us to invite these outstanding speakers at an early stage. All sponsors will be acknowledged appropriately after the sponsorship deadline of 1 December 2017.

Registration for the conference can be done electronically via the SAPBA website.

Once registered you will receive an e-mail confirming your registration. Included in this e-mail will be a conference registration number. Please use this together with your surname in all correspondence with the conference secretariat and when submitting your abstract and making payments. Please note the following when registering online:


First register as member, then register for the conference.  Member registration does not automatically register you for the conference.

-           Please indicate whether you are a SAPBA member, non-member or a student

-           Please indicate whether you will attend the conference dinner

-           If you are only going to attend certain days, you can register as a day visitor, but please indicate for how many days. The fee of R650 is per day you want to attend

            Student discount will be calculated when abstract for oral or poster presentations are received and students will be billed accordingly (Free for oral presentation, R1000 for poster presentation).

For bookings at the Gateway Hotel please contact the reservations manager at the hotel directly ( Please do not make any bookings using the internet. Room rates starting at R1511.70 per ROOM per night have been negotiated at the symposium venue (R755,85 per person, breakfast incl.).

Once the bookings are confirmed the hotel will send you an invoice for prepayment.

Note that the rooms will be released as follows :

90 Days Prior to arrival : 30% of unconfirmed rooms to be released

60 Days Prior to arrival : 50% of unconfirmed rooms to be released

30 Days Prior to arrival : Balance of unconfirmed rooms to be released

Nomination forms for honorary members of the SAPBA will be available on the website from November 2017. Please send nominations to the conference secretariat as soon as possible thereafter, but before 15 January 2018.
